Four ladies of a certain age who run a charity shop are made to examine the nature of charitable giving by Galbraith, a Bible quoting tramp who is a regular visitor to the shop. Does Hilda the Manageress really care? Are the ladies merely engaged in “a little light work of a voluntary nature for the doubtful benefit of distant humanity to help soothe the small prickings of their conscience” or does charity begin closer to home? At times dark, at times comedic, it is a commentary on charity and giving generally.
